Balance a line in operation mode

The default Line Balancing Chart view shows operations and processes that consist of multiple sequential operations. Use operation mode to balance both object types at the same time.

Procedure

1. In Teamcenter, open the plant BOP with an appropriate line structure.

Note To drag operations and manufacturing processes to a station, the MEAllocationLevel and MELBChartStationTypes preferences must be set to Mfg0MEProcStatn.

2. If you have not already done so, assign time to your operations, processes, and resources.

3. If you previously changed your default Line Balancing Chart view to display only processes, choose Edit → Options, search on the keyword LB, and ensure that the following preferences are set to OP.

MELBChartProcessOperationTypes

Shows both operations and processes in the Line Balancing Chart view.

MELBChartDnDSourceTypes

Enables you to drag operations in the Line Balancing Chart view.

4. Ensure that the following preference is set to Process.

MELBChartDnDTargetParentTypes

Lets you drag operations to stations and resources in the Line Balancing Chart view.

5. In the plant BOP, right-click the process area, line, or station for which you want to balance operations and processes and choose Open with→Line Balancing Chart.

By default, the Line Balancing Chart view opens in station view to show individual stations, labeled qp1... in this example, as well as operations and processes assigned to those stations. In this example, the first three stations on the line contain processes, indicated by the dark bars at the top. Each block in a process represents a sequentially defined operation. Blocks without dark bars represent individual operations.

Tip To view the complete station names, hover the mouse over the labels or click Increase Bar Width .

6. If you are using process resources to represent multiple workers or machines, choose View Menu→Switch Views→Details.

The details view shows operations and processes that are or are not assigned to resources, clustered for each station. Operations that are allocated to resources are gray in the left bars, labeled Not... in this example, or green if they are not yet allocated to a resource. Allocated operations also appear green in the resources, labeled qp1....

Processes that are allocated to resources appear white with diagonal lines in the left bars as well as in the resource to which they are allocated. Processes not allocated to resources show dark bars. In this example:

No processes, but some operations, are allocated to resources in station qp131552. The time to complete all operations and processes exceeds the available station time.

One process and three operations are allocated to resources in station qp131573. The time to complete all operations and processes again exceeds the available station time.

No processes and two operations are allocated to resources in station qp131583. The station’s available time is adequate to complete all the assigned operations and processes.

No processes or operations are allocated to resources in station qp131604. This station has room for additional processes and operations to reduce the workload on the first two stations.

7. (Optional) Customize and navigate the Line Balancing Chart view.

Note You can customize the colors of operations, processes, text, and tooltips using the MELBChartColors preference.

8. To be able to drag processes as well as operations, click Collection Mode .

9. Select operations or processes to be allocated elsewhere.

You can:

Hover the mouse over sections of an operation or operation within a process to view its name, ID, description, and allocated time.

Navigate through the stations, resources, operations, and processes in the bar chart using the arrow keys on the keyboard.

Select individual operations in a station or resource bar. They are displayed in blue in the bar chart and highlighted in the plant BOP structure.

Select an entire station by clicking its name below the bar chart. Selecting a station in the bar chart also selects it in the plant BOP structure, and vice versa.

Press and hold Ctrl or Shift and then select multiple operations or processes.

10. Drag the operation or process to an appropriate station or resource.

Note

To remove a resource or operation from a resource bar, drag it back to the station bar, or select it in the resource bar and click Unallocate .

You cannot drag operations assigned to a process outside that process, change the order of a process, or drag operations that are outside a process into a process in the Line Balancing Chart view.

11. Repeat steps 9-10 until all operations and processes are evenly balanced across the line.

Note If the PSM_Enable_Product_Configurator preference is set to true OR the configurator context is attached to the PlantBOP structure, the PlantBOP → Open With → Line Balancing Chart option is not available in the rich client.
